The Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Devices and Systems was established in December 2002, passed the acceptance of Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology in November 2005, and passed the acceptance of the Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education in December 2007. It is a key laboratory jointly established by the Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province. Respectively in 2014 and 2016, it was evaluated as good and excellent in the key laboratory evaluation organized by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology. After more than ten years of development, the laboratory has an experimental building of 8,200 square meters, including an ultra-clean laboratory of 1,200 square meters, with a total value of 125 million yuan in equipment. At present, the laboratory has formed a high-level scientific research team with national outstanding youths as academic leaders and national outstanding youths as academic backbones. There are currently 52 regular researchers, including 2 winners of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 Pearl River Scholar Distinguished Professor, 1 outstanding youth in Guangdong Province, 3 talents of Guangdong Special Support Plan, and 3 provincial training objects of Guangdong Thousand and Ten Talents.

In the past five years, the key laboratory has undertaken a total of 316 scientific research projects, with a contract fund of 230 million yuan and a receipt fund of 157 million yuan. Including the Ministry of Science and Technology major special instruments, major national science and technology special projects (military), 973 plan sub-projects, national fund major instrument special projects, key projects, key international cooperation projects, outstanding youth projects, excellent youth projects, general projects, and more than 60 important projects such as the major special projects of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Plan, the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation Research Team Project and the Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Youth Project. The laboratory won 1 second prize of Guangdong Province Science and Technology Award, 1 third prize of Guangdong Province Science and Technology Award, and 2 Shenzhen Science and Technology Award. 140 patent applications, 56 authorized invention patents, 14 PCT patents, 31 utility model patents, and 5 technology transfers. Published 834 SCI-collected papers in authoritative journals such as Nature Photonics, Nature Communications, Chemical Reviews, Chemical Society Reviews, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, Nano Today, Chem, among which more than 450 papers in JCR II or above of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
